An attic to clear in Ghent before the roofer arrives, before a sale or after the parents have moved out? We first set aside photos, letters and papers, then bring down trunks, furniture and boxes without damaging the stairwell. A few photos of the access are often enough for a free quote.
Attic clearance in Ghent: our approach
Ghent has strongly contrasting attics. The old town houses of the centre and the Patershol have lofts under tall roofs, reached by an ever-narrowing staircase, sometimes above flats without a lift. The small workers' houses of Brugse Poort and Ledeberg, including those in the beluiken courtyards, have only a low loft where you can barely stand, reached by a hatch; everything is carried by hand to the street. Student houses often have a loft full of old mattresses and furniture. In Drongen, Mariakerke or Zwijnaarde, houses with gardens tend to have an unboarded loft above the bedrooms, with a pull-down ladder.
An attic in Ghent often holds what a family could never throw away: trunks, Christmas decorations, toys, old furniture. Reusable items go to the social economy or are sold on, and their value is deducted from the price. You need not be there all day: a list and a key are enough.
Attic clearance in Ghent: access, carrying down and removal
In Ghent, the street needs arranging early: a "vergunning inname publieke ruimte" from the City is required, at least 5 working days ahead for a parking space and 10 working days if the truck takes up the roadway, and the applicant places the signs. We build these deadlines into the schedule, especially when the attic must be clear before a roofer arrives. In a beluik, where the truck cannot get close, the attic descent is followed by carrying everything along the alley: we then work with light loads and sturdy bags. In the centre, the old staircases of the town houses are protected along their full height. Photos, papers and family items are set aside. IVAGO's recycling parks take residents under IVAGO's rules; our loads go to the social economy and suitable recycling channels.
Ghent attic clearance: the circulation plan, Patershol and summer lets
The circulation plan divides the centre into sectors: a vehicle cannot drive from one to the next and has to go back out via the R40 ring road. For an attic in the centre, we therefore work out the route before setting the time, so the truck arrives through the right sector. In Patershol and around the Gravensteen, the medieval lanes often only take a van: we then plan several runs rather than one large vehicle.
Student rooms belonging to Ghent University and the colleges change tenants en masse in summer. That is when a landlord can have the loft of a student house cleared without disturbing anyone, provided it is booked early. The low-emission zone also determines the vehicle used. We work the same way in Muide, Gentbrugge, Sint-Amandsberg, Oostakker or Wondelgem, sorting on site between reuse and recycling.
