Basement clearance in Liège: our approach
Liège cellars have a reputation for being deep. In Outremeuse, Saint-Léonard or the centre, old houses stand on brick vaults, sometimes on two levels, which you enter stooping via a low staircase. The damp of the Meuse valley softens boxes, books and chipboard furniture down there. We work with gloves, masks and lamps, wrap anything mouldy on site and bring everything up in light loads. Bottles, jars and old bikes are sorted as we go. In houses split into student rooms or flats, we only clear the cellar belonging to the owner concerned. Anything that can still be used is offered for reuse.
- Vaulted cellar: furniture dismantled on site, several rooms cleared one after another.
- Private storage cellar in a building: access arranged with the managing agent, only your compartment is cleared.
- Full basement: cellar, laundry and boiler room in one quote.
Each type of cellar in Liège has its own method.
Clearing a cellar in Liège: stairs, damp and access
On the slopes of Pierreuse and Sainte-Walburge, some houses are built into the hillside: the cellar then opens at ground level onto a garden below, which makes getting things out easier, but the street is sometimes just a flight of public steps that no vehicle can use. Carrying over a long distance is then needed, and we allow for it in the quote. In the townhouses around Guillemins, the vaulted wine cellar sometimes holds pleasant surprises: a stock of bottles can lower the price, or even cover it. For parking, the public-domain occupation permit is issued by the City of Liège, with signage; in narrow streets we come with a smaller vehicle. Intradel's recyparcs are for residents: our loads go to suitable recycling channels, paint and solvents separately. The cellar is swept before we leave.
Cellar clearance in Liège: Laveu, Sainte-Marguerite and mid-August
Here the date matters almost as much as the stairs. Around 15 August, the Outremeuse festivities close or occupy many streets for several days: we do not schedule cellar clearances in the district at that time. In June and September, ULiège student rooms empty out en masse and road-occupation permits are in high demand, so it is best to book a few weeks ahead.
In Laveu and Sainte-Marguerite, many homes are walk-up flats: a tenant's or landlord's cellar is cleared by hand, through the shared stairwell, in loads we can carry without damaging the walls. In Bressoux, Jupille-sur-Meuse or Wandre, as in Angleur, Chênée, Grivegnée, Cointe or Rocourt, the same prior visit is used to measure the stairs, the way out and where the truck can stand. Bottles, tools or furniture that can still be used are set aside for reuse.
