Attic clearance in Bruges: our approach

In Bruges, the UNESCO-listed centre is lined with historic gabled houses whose attic, under a very steep roof, sometimes spreads over several loft levels linked by ship's ladders. The small almshouses, the godshuizen, have only a tiny loft, often reached through a hatch. In Sint-Kruis, Assebroek or Sint-Michiels, the 1960s and 1970s terraced houses tend to have an unboarded loft above the bedrooms, with a pull-down ladder, full of toys, suitcases and Christmas decorations. Towards Lissewege, Dudzele or Koolkerke, it is sometimes a farmhouse attic. We clear each one according to its access. Keepsakes are set aside for you first.

An attic in Bruges often holds what a family could never throw away: trunks, Christmas decorations, toys, old furniture. Reusable items go to the social economy or are sold on, and their value is deducted from the price. You need not be there all day: a list and a key are enough.

Attic clearance in Bruges: access, carrying down and removal

In Bruges' historic centre, traffic and parking are tightly regulated: occupying the public road for the truck has to be requested from the City well in advance, and we account for that as soon as the date is set. In a gabled house, the attic is cleared level by level: the top loft first, then the next, with light loads on steep ship's ladders and careful protection of old treads and woodwork. Items of value, antique furniture, trunks or collectables, can be deducted from the price and may even make the clearance free. In the houses of Sint-Kruis or Assebroek, the challenge is rather the pull-down ladder: everything comes down one piece at a time. The Bruges recycling parks, run since 2022 by the IVBO intermunicipal company, serve residents; our loads follow suitable reuse and recycling channels.

Bruges attic clearance: almshouses, Sint-Andries and Zeebrugge

The godshuizen, almshouses grouped around an inner garden, can only be reached through a narrow passage: everything brought down from the small attic is carried by hand across the garden to the street, in light loads. In the gabled houses, low doors mean furniture has to be dismantled before it can go out, and along the canals the street is sometimes barely wider than a car. A van making several runs then often replaces a large truck.

Beyond the old ramparts, Sint-Andries has villas that are easier to reach, where the vehicle can park without difficulty. In Zeebrugge, with its flats close to the sea, any storage space under the roof is cleared in agreement with the building manager. Sint-Pieters, Koolkerke and Dudzele are also part of our area, with systematic sorting on site.

FAQ

Your questions about an attic clearance in Bruges

How much does an attic clearance cost in Bruges?

An attic is quoted on access (hatch, loft ladder, narrow stairs), volume and sorting; if antique furniture and reusable items cover the cost, the clearance is free, if they exceed it we pay you the difference, otherwise you pay a fixed price on quotation. The visit, the written quote and an estimate from photos are free; the price in the quote is the price you pay. More on our pricing page.

Can you work in a listed house in the centre of Bruges?

Yes. We clear the attic without touching the building: protection for stairs and woodwork, no building elements removed, everything carried down by hand. Occupation of the public road is requested from the City of Bruges well in advance.

How quickly can you come to Bruges?

The free visit usually takes place within 48 hours, then we agree the date together. Urgent (end of lease, sale, key handover)? Call +32 485 39 99 41.

Do you work in summer, when it is very hot under the roof?

Yes. In hot weather we start early in the morning, take regular breaks and bring water for the team. In extreme heat we can also suggest moving the job by a few days.

Can you clear an attic reached only by a pull-down loft ladder?

Yes. One person works upstairs, one at the foot of the ladder and a third on the ground floor; items come down one by one, in closed boxes of a reasonable weight. Furniture too large for the hatch is dismantled on site. This difficulty is assessed at the visit and included in the quote.
