Basement clearance in Bruges: our approach

In Bruges' historic centre, the cellars of gabled houses are low and close to the water level of the canals, which makes them prone to damp. Access is through a hatch in the hallway or a steep staircase, and the way out is a single, often narrow, street door. We bring everything up by hand in light loads, protecting the old steps and stone thresholds. Softened boxes, bottles, old tools and damp-swollen furniture are sorted on site. In the godshuizen grouped around an inner garden, there is often only a small storage space, cleared by hand through the entrance passage.

Soaked boxes, mouldy textiles, swollen chipboard: in a damp cellar in Bruges, we wrap these materials on site so spores do not spread through the house. Papers, photos and letters we find, even damaged, are set aside in a crate and handed back to you.

Clearing a cellar in Bruges: stairs, damp and access

Bruges' centre is a World Heritage Site and traffic there is tightly regulated: public road occupation is requested from the city well in advance, and a van making several runs often replaces a large truck. We group those runs to limit trips past the protected facades. Outside the ramparts, in Sint-Kruis, Assebroek or Sint-Michiels, houses from the 1960s and 1970s usually have a dry basement with a boiler room, where the old heating oil tank is sometimes still in place: we clear the room around it and recommend a specialist for the tank. Sorting happens as we go: glass, metal, wood, appliances, paper. Paint and cleaning products are kept apart. IVBO's recycling parks are for residents; our loads follow suitable recycling channels. Papers and photos found in damp boxes are set aside for you.

Bruges basement clearance: canal streets, Sint-Andries and Zeebrugge

Along the canals in the centre, the street is sometimes barely wider than a car: the van only stops long enough to load, and we prepare each load indoors so the stop is as short as possible. The low doors of the gabled houses also mean shelving and old furniture are dismantled in the basement itself rather than carried out whole.

Beyond the old ramparts, Sint-Andries is mostly villas, easier to reach, where loading is straightforward. In Zeebrugge, the flats close to the sea are in apartment buildings: where the home has a storage cellar, we agree access with the building manager and touch only the designated unit. Sint-Pieters, Koolkerke, Dudzele and Lissewege are also part of our area. Everywhere, bottles, tools and bikes that can still be used are set aside for reuse before the rest is removed.

FAQ

Your questions about a basement clearance in Bruges

How much does a basement clearance cost in Bruges?

A cellar is quoted on volume, stairs, damp and special waste; if it holds valuable reusable items (bottles, bikes, tools, antique furniture), the clearance can be free or we pay you the difference, otherwise you pay a fixed price on quotation. The visit, the written quote and an estimate from photos are free; the price in the quote is the price you pay. More on our pricing page.

Can a low cellar near the Bruges canals be cleared without damaging the house?

Yes. We protect old steps and thresholds, dismantle what does not fit and carry up light loads. Damp materials are wrapped on site so nothing in the house gets dirty.

How quickly can you come to Bruges?

The free visit usually takes place within 48 hours, then we agree the date together. Urgent (end of lease, sale, key handover)? Call +32 485 39 99 41.

Can you clear just my private storage cellar in a block of flats?

Yes. We need access to the cellar corridor (key or badge, often via the managing agent) and the exact compartment number. We touch nothing else, protect the lift and hall if we use them, and sweep the shared corridor as we leave.

My cellar stairs are very narrow and the ceiling is low. Is that a problem?

No, that is the case in most old cellars. We dismantle furniture that does not fit, carry everything up in light loads with a carrying chain and protect the steps. Access affects how long the job takes, which is why we look at it closely before quoting.
